I began belly dance lessons in 1997 and am passionate about professional development. I feel it is important to make time to study with well-regarded professionals. I have taken workshops with Yousry Sharif, Nourhan, Mahmoud Reda, Ansuya, Shoshonna, Morocco, Margo, Raqia Hassan, Suhaila, and Jillina.
My academic background is in exercise science & dance. In different ways, both have proved instrumental in helping me move from a begining student to a teacher & performer. Dance training provided the kinesthic awareness needed for belly dancing. Exercise science has given me a knowledge base for training & teaching.
Belly dance and exercise science have come together to manifest a creative oulet in helping students and dance professionals train physically to enhance their practice. This direction first emerged in 2002 when I introduced belly dance fitness classes to the University of Florida. The class is consistantly popular with sometimes as many as 50 participants. Its great to see women who may not have otherwise taken bellydance find a connection through fitness.
More recently exercise and dance have come together as the conceptual framework for my studio Hip Moves. Opened in October 2005 and located in Gainesville, Florida, Hip Moves offers bellydance, yoga, pilates, personal training and more. Its a place for fitness, training, art, and performance. My mission is to build strength and confidence by pursuing self-expression and creativity.
Outside of teaching and training at the studio, I enjoy other dance forms, for example, Dance Trance, Modern, and spending part of the summer cycling & hiking.
